Virtual Telecommunication Community : every service for everyone (VTC2e)

The VTC2e project aims to provide all the possible transparency in an evolving highly dynamic environment. Users in such an environment might move from a location to another, use a set of heterogeneous terminals to access services (subscribed and/or ambient) in a personalized manner according to where they are or the activity that they exert or the period of the day.

The first motive concept that we have proposed is user’s infosphere which represents the information system of the user. The personal information and the preferences concerning user’s terminals, networks and services which user can reach were structured (in a user profile) to apply the second concept: active profile.

The latter makes it possible to dynamically trace the modifications of information according to the temporal and spatial location of the user, as well as his calendar. All resources are associated with a usage profile which contains, for a given user, the description of the offered possibilities and the imposed constraints. To discover the activated and/or activable resources (for a given user) a specific component called “ambient grid” is introduced. Those resources which are available (activable or not) will be maintained in the ambient grid whereas, the unavailable ones will be removed.

When the user requests for a service, Userware assembles virtual organization (VPUN) according to the requirements expressed in the user’s request and to the current possibilities in the ambient grid. The VPUN contains an automatically selected subset of knowing business entity which collaborates to provide an E2E service (the most adequate offer) to satisfy user’s request. A self-management mechanism is proposed through VUNs. These are logical networks gathering of equivalent providers who may intervene, if necessary (e.g. at the time of the failure), to assure the QoS contract of another member belonging to a VPUN.

News : Project result demonstration is scheduled for 21 Feb. 2006.

Participants

This project is a bilateral collaboration between Vodafone SFR and Telecom Paris.

Results

The theoretical and practical results of the common work of the two participants have been presented at the SFR/Vodafone Meeting in Paris/France. The team of the ENST Paris presented the prototype of Userware and showed a demonstrator : a scenario in which a given user requests to watch a movie. Dynamique construction of virtual organisation (VPUN) and dynamique selection of networked service components (VPSN) permitted to underline the advantages brought by Userware comparing to legacy systems.

A paper Userware entitled "Userware: Virtual Service Access towards Usage Integration” was  presented at the Next Generation Network Middleware (NGNM04) which took place in Athens/Greece in June 2004. Another paper entitled " Userware: a framework for next generation services”, will appear in the special issue of Computer Communications journal on Emerging Middleware for Next Generation Networks, Edition Elsevier.
