Télécom ParisTech is hiring an associate professor in large scale distributed systems.

The position is opened at the Computer Science and Networks Department (aka INFRES), « System, Software, Services (S3) » team.
It will be located in Paris (13th district) and will be transfered to Palaiseau (91) when Télécom ParisTech moves there, in the coming years.

1 MISSIONS:

The candidate will:

  • Take part in the design and in the teaching of computer science courses, in particular in the area of operating systems, distributed systems and software architectures.
  • Do research in the area of large scale distributed systems.
  • Take part in the development of industrial and academic partnerships, collaborations and contracts in his/her domain.

2 MAIN ACTIVITIES:

Teaching activities

The candidate will:

• Teach in the field of operating systems, software engineering, programming and distributed systems for bachelor and master students as well as highly qualified professionals. Teaching will involve lectures, practical work in the form of laboratories, as well as practical projects when appropriate.
• Help identify evolving needs in the field of operating systems, software engineering, programming and distributed systems.
• Be in charge of creating or updating courses:

  • According to identified needs.
  • By designing educational tools and methods matched to distributed systems teaching requirements.

• Help select candidates for the various programs offered at Télécom ParisTech.

Research activities:

The candidate will:
• Conduct upstream and applied research projects in large scale distributed systems.
• Contribute to proposals in answer to public calls from national and European research agencies as well as joint laboratories.
• Launch and/or contribute to industrial projects.

Advising and tutoring:

• The position includes supervision of doctoral students.
• The candidate will also tutor student projects and student internships.

Communication:

The candidate will:
• Publish his/her research results.
• Present his work at various occasions including conferences.
• Get involved in scientific/professional societies.
• Develop close links with academic institutions, research centers and companies.

Miscellaneous :

The candidate will participate in the department and the school life by taking his/her share of collective research, teaching, management … tasks.

3 TRAINING AND SKILLS:

Qualifications and experience:

• PhD level required.
• A prior experience in research and teaching will be appreciated.

Required knowledge, know-how and experience:

• Theoretical and practical knowledge of the area of large scale distributed systems (architecture, algorithms, modelling, conception, development and performance analysis).
• Knowledge of one or more of the following areas:

  • Large scale systems involving elements of various nature and characteristics (servers, personal computers, tablets, smartphones, sensors).
  • Software aspects of « smart GRID ».
  •  Software aspects of « Internet of Things ».
  • Mobile computing, pervasive/ubiquitous computing.
  • Statistical distributed algorithms, autonomic solutions, dynamic adaptation.

• Knowledge to teach in particular in the area of operating systems, distributed systems and algorithms, middleware and programming.
• Experience in teaching and research.
• Oral and written English.
• For non-native speakers, French level equivalent to B2 is required, as well as willingness to quickly master oral and written communication in French.

Desired additional skills:

• Ability to develop software (on a variety of platforms and operating systems).
• System modeling.
• Large scale systems performance evaluation (through tests, simulations, analytical models).

Qualities and abilities:

• Good teaching skills.
• Excellent oral communication.
• Clear and effective written reporting. Ability to make synthesis.
• Efficient team work.
